After taking the lead in the fourth quarter,
Mead (Longmont, Colo.) held on for a 34-27 victory over
Berthoud (Colo.) on Saturday. The difference for the Maverick was
Griffin Nelson ran for a touchdown.
The Maverick led 27-7 at halftime, but the Spartans recaptured the lead on a touchdown with 7:00 remaining in the fourth. Mead finally took the lead for good as Nelson ran for a touchdown with 2:00 remaining in the fourth quarter.
MHS saw its 20-point halftime lead fall to seven entering the fourth.
James Richardson and Nelson ran for a bunch of touchdowns for Berthoud. Richardson scored two touchdowns on the ground and Nelson added two as well.
The Longmont school's standout player in the win was Nelson. The junior quarterback threw one touchdown.
Nick Dietz made a difference for BHS. The junior quarterback threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored four touchdowns on the season.
Berthoud (1-5) goes up against Roosevelt in a 3A Tri-Valley game matchup next week, while Mead (3-3) locks horns with Northridge also in a 3A Tri-Valley game.
