Evergreen is 9-1 against Conifer since May of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Cougars will be playing in front of their home fans against the Lobos at 11:00 a.m. Evergreen is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.2 runs per game this season.
Evergreen will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Saturday, then bounced right back against Wheat Ridge on Monday. The Cougars blew past the Farmers 14-2. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won eight matchups by eight runs or more so far this season.
James Mauro was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Keller Fiore was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
Evergreen always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .541. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wheat Ridge only posted an OBP of .367.
The home team had come away the winner the last four times Conifer and Pomona had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Lobos fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 8-6 on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Lobos have suffered since April 16th.
Conifer also got a good showing from Garrett Plomondon, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Plomondon has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Conifer saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mckade Tracy, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI. Another was Ethan Ellis, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.
Evergreen has been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 12 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Conifer, their loss dropped their record down to 13-9.
Saturday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Evergreen has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .461. However, it's not like Conifer struggles in that department as they've averaged .437. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Evergreen skirted past Conifer 7-5 when the teams last played back in April. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Lobos turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
