MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Broomfield (Colo.) Eagles have officially been named to the 13th Annual MaxPreps Soccer Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its seventh year honoring soccer.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for 100 of the top teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the MaxPreps National Rankings. For soccer, only 20 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 34,000 competing varsity teams, this puts the Eagles ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
In order to be eligible, the team not only had to be nationally ranked, but also had to win a state championship. Beating Denver East 1-0 on Saturday, Nov. 11 in the
CHSAA Class 5A state championship contest marked the completion of an incredible 17-2-1 season — and earned Broomfield an invitation to the Tour of Champions.
Senior Michael Mooney scored the lone goal of the title match when Tristan Austin won a ball and sent a pass his way in the 25th minute. The Eagle defense then made it stand, allowing Broomfield to secure its state-leading seventh state soccer championship at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The championship win was the third Class 5A state title for the Eagles in four years.
Defensively, Jose Ogaz was at his best in posting the shutout. The Eagle goalkeeper came up with nine saves in the title game, including one in the 47th minute that he slapped over the bar for the seventh-seed Eagles.
Broomfield opened state playoff competition with a 3-0 win over Rock Canyon. Then, following a 4-1 triumph over Cherry Creek, the Eagles blanked the Far Northeast Warriors 4-0 to kick in the door to the Final Four. Broomfield bumped Fort Collins from championship contention with a 3-1 semifinal win to set up the championship bout with Denver East.
Jim Davidson's club opened the season with a 1-0 loss to Boulder. But, Broomfield responded with six straight wins before dropping a 1-0 decision to Fairview. The Eagles won 11 of their final 12 matches of the season. Broomfield's only blemish of the final run was a 0-0 double overtime draw with Legacy. The Eagles outscored their competition 72-13 and posted 10 shutouts on the year. Broomfield held 18 opponents to one goal or less. Having won their final seven matches of the season, the Eagles set themselves up for some rather high rankings come season's end. Not only is Davidson's club the top squad in MaxPreps'
Colorado Class 5A rankings, Broomfield is the best team in all of
Colorado. The Eagles are ranked No. 28 in
MaxPreps' National Rankings!
These incredible season achievements have earned the Broomfield Eagles an invitation to the 13th Annual Tour of Champions. Please join us in the gymnasium as we celebrate with the boys soccer team, coaching staff, students and fans on Friday, Feb. 2 at approximately 6:30 p.m. during halftime of the boys varsity basketball game.
