Charleston and Taylorville are an even 5-5 against one another since October of 2015, but not for long. The Trojans will head out to face off against the Tornadoes at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Charleston has given up an average of 49 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Charleston came into their game on Friday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They were beaten by Mt. Zion 70-0. The matchup marked the first time this season in which the Trojans were not able to get on the board.
Meanwhile, you can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Taylorville's strategy against Mattoon on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Tornadoes blew the Greenwave out of the water with a 50-6 final score. The game marked the Tornadoes' most dominant win of the season.
Charleston better keep an eye on Isaac Repscher. He was instrumental in Taylorville's win, throwing for 207 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 passes, while also rushing for 44 yards and one score. Wyatt Younker did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 81 receiving yards.
Taylorville didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Mattoon to a completion percentage of just 45.5%. That defensive display was nothing new: the Tornadoes have limited their opponent to a lower and lower completion percentage in three consecutive contests.
The victory got Taylorville back to even at 3-3. As for Charleston, their loss was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-5.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Charleston has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 156.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Taylorville struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 200.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Charleston couldn't quite get it done against Taylorville in their previous matchup back in October of 2024 as they fell 35-23. Can the Trojans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
