The Germantown Mavericks will challenge the Loyd Star Hornets at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams are out to turn their luck around after having lost tight contests in their previous games.
Germantown blew Tupelo out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Tuesday Tupelo got their revenge. The Mavericks fell just short of the Golden Wave by a score of 8-6.
Germantown got a good showing from Presley Cutrer, who tossed four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits.
On the hitting side, Presley Merkich was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Lily Bittle, who scored two runs while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Loyd Star unfortunately witnessed the end of their six-game winning streak on Friday. They fell just short of Lawrence County by a score of 13-11. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Hornets, who until this contest were averaging 3.35 runs allowed.
Kaylin Hester led a balanced group of hitters, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 4-for-4. Maddie Kate Britt was another key player, scoring four runs while going 2-for-4.
Germantown's loss ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-7. As for Loyd Star, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Germantown has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Loyd Star struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Germantown's way against Loyd Star in their previous meeting back in March of 2021, as Germantown made off with a 14-1 victory. Will the Mavericks repeat their success, or do the Hornets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
