Baseball Game Preview: Parkersburg Big Reds vs. St. Albans Red Dragons

Parkersburg hasn't had much luck against St. Albans recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Big Reds will venture away from home to challenge the Red Dragons at 6:00 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Parkersburg took a loss when they played away from home last Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They came out on top against Marietta by a score of 6-1. The win continues a trend for the Big Reds in their matchups with the Tigers: they've now won six in a row.

Parker Woods was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Parkersburg is undefeated when Woods posts two or more runs, but 6-12 otherwise. Cooper Cancade was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI.

Parkersburg was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April of 2024.

Meanwhile, St. Albans had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Wednesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Wildcats an 8-0 shutout. The Red Dragons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 matches by six runs or more this season.

Parkersburg pushed their record up to 11-12 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for St. Albans, their victory bumped their record up to 18-7.

Parkersburg came out on top in a nail-biter against St. Albans in their previous meeting back in April, sneaking past 5-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Big Reds since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
