Buchanan can attribute much of their success to Gannon Sever, who rushed for 148 yards and two scores on only 14 carries, and Tommy Devany, who threw for 287 yards and three TDs. Sever has become a key player for the Bears: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least 80 rushing yards, but 2-3 otherwise. 103 of Devany's passing yards were hauled in by Hudson Menzes, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.
Buchanan didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Clovis North to a completion percentage of just 36.8%. The Bears weren't nearly as limited: they posted one of 68.8%.
Meanwhile, Central East had already won eight in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20.5 points) and they went ahead and made it nine on Friday. They claimed a resounding 56-21 victory over the Timberwolves. Considering the Bengals have won six contests by more than 23 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Buchanan better keep an eye on Jelani Dippel. He was instrumental in Central East's win, throwing for 397 yards and seven touchdowns while picking up 13.2 yards per attempt. Those seven passing touchdowns gave Dippel a new career-high. Titus Thomas was Dippel's top target, picking up 43 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.
Central East didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Xavior Jones and Jontae Della. Chris Perry was another major factor on D, forcing one fumble, making eight total tackles, and defending three passes.
Buchanan's record is now 7-4. As for Central East, their record now sits at 10-1.
Buchanan came up short against Central East in their previous matchup two weeks ago, falling 46-38. Can the Bears avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
