Jefferson Area and Madison are an even 2-2-2 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Falcons will face off against the Blue Streaks at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Jefferson Area is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
The scorekeeper got an easy start on Friday as neither Jefferson Area nor West Geauga made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Falcons fell just short of the Wolverines by a score of 5-4. The Falcons' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Alaina Barress was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Kennidie Rogers, who went 1-for-4 with one home run.
Meanwhile, Madison came tearing into Friday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Blue Devils by a score of 5-1.
Kara Mekulsia made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 11 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one double and one RBI.
Mekulsia wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Tori Semple, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Addy Behm was another, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Jefferson Area's loss dropped their record down to 7-6. As for Madison, their record is now 8-1.
Monday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Jefferson Area hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .389. However, it's not like Madison struggles in that department as they've averaged .388. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Jefferson Area came up short against Madison in their previous meeting back in March, falling 6-2. Can the Falcons avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
