It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but the Cumberland Clippers had no problem doing just that on Friday. Everything went their way against Burrillville as Cumberland made off with a 41-19 win. Cumberland is really starting to get used to good results now that the team's won 11 straight dating back to last season.
Cumberland got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Andrew Ray out in front who rushed for 247 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.0 yards per carry. Evan Spencer was another key contributor, rushing for 98 yards and three touchdowns.
Despite the loss, Burrillville still got an impressive performance from Leland Kelleher, who rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries.
Cumberland's victory was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-1. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 2-8 East Greenwich and 2-5 Mt. Pleasant (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 44% over those games). As for Burrillville, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-5.
Cumberland will take on Barrington at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Barrington is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune. Burrillville will have plenty of time to ponder what went wrong as they've got a bye scheduled next week. After, they'll take on Ponaganset at 10:00 a.m. on November 23rd. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Rhode Island (Ponaganset is ranked 20th, while Burrillville is ranked seventh).
