On Friday, La Joya Community came up short against Independence and fell 20-7.
Jamie Ozuna threw for 47 yards on two of five attempts. Jacob Gerrardo was his top target, picking up 38 receiving yards. On the ground, Daves Pearson rushed for 33 yards and a touchdown.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Independence to victory, but perhaps none more so than Chance Ogle, who rushed for 138 yards. Ogle hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for four straight games.
The team's defense also helped out by holding La Joya Community to a paltry 90 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Independence's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out six times before it was all said and done. The heavy lifting was done by Jerry Washington and Michael Palmer who racked up six sacks between them.
La Joya Community's loss dropped their record down to 3-7. As for Independence, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 8-2.
La Joya Community will be playing at home against Seton Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Seton Catholic is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses. As for Independence, they will head out on the road to face off against Gila Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Gila Ridge is coming into the match on a five-game losing streak.
