Basketball Recap: Rye Takes a Loss

Rye lost against Crowley County back in February of 2022, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Rye Thunderbolts had to suffer through a 78-42 loss at the hands of the Crowley County Chargers. While losing is never fun, the Thunderbolts can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 251st in Colorado, while the Chargers are ranked 60th in Colorado).

Rye's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Wyatt Scheid, who posted four points and 19 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Scheid a new career-high in boards. Jackson Bjorum was another key player, dropping a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds.

Leading Crowley County to victory were Gunner Hughes and Anthoni Walter. Hughes went 10-for-23 on his way to 25 points along with seven boards and five steals, while Walter went 7-for-15 en route to 18 points in addition to eight rebounds and six steals. Hughes' big performance that evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 21 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ben Cuckow, who earned seven points along with five boards and three steals.

Rye's loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 7-14. As for Crowley County, the win (which was their ninth in a row) raised their record to 19-2.

Looking ahead, Rye will take on La Junta at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Rye has given up an average of 49.9 points per game this season, so hopefully the team got some defensive drills in this week. As for Crowley County, they will face off against Hoehne at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Crowley County is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 63.9 points per game this season.
