A District 2 recap Oct. 3, 2012
Newman Catholic's Joe Burgmeier rumbled for the longest rushing play in A District 2 this season in his game against AGWSR last week. Burgmeier's team defeated the Cougars as he sprinted for 71 yards on the play and finished with 188 in all.
West Hancock extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Lake Mills, 40-14. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Eagles.
Newman Catholic's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Jack Fitzgerald threw for 102 and one touchdown and Spencer Schmidt had 47 yards receiving. Seth Hestness helped Newman Catholic's passing attack out by catching one ball for 25 yards.
Burgmeier made the biggest impact on defense this week as Mike Dirksen's team bested AGWSR. The 6-foot-0 junior pulled down one interception.
Newman Catholic's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Knights feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Fitzgerald has thrown for 288 yards and one touchdown this season, while Schmidt has four catches for 138 yards. Burgmeier leads the league in rushing with 836 yards.
A big matchup in A District 2 this week will be when the Bulldogs take on Prairie Valley. At the moment, Lake Mills is in fifth, while the Warriors are in second.
The Knights took down Matt Lindeman's team 42-6 last week, the largest margin of any game. Burgmeier in the win.
