The Cape Fear Colts had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 29.9 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Friday. They strolled past Seventy-First with points to spare, taking the game 74-57. Given Cape Fear's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 29th, while Seventy-First is ranked 252nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jayda Angel was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 27 points and 14 rebounds. That makes it 18 consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Cape Fear's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Elisabeth Kirkland, who scored 12 points along with eight assists and eight rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Seventy-First lost, one person who can't be blamed is Mariyah Massey. Despite the final result, she scored 19 points along with eight rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Massey has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Jewel Gully, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds.
Cape Fear's win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-1. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 75.3 points per game. As for Seventy-First, their loss ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-10.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cape Fear will challenge Douglas Byrd at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Cape Fear has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 577 points over their last eight contests. As for Seventy-First, they will head out on the road to challenge Jack Britt at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Jack Britt is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 51.8 points per game this season.
