Softball Recap: Century Continues Road Dominance on Friday

The matchup between Century and Meridian on Friday hardly resembled the 1-0 effort from their previous meeting. The Centurions blew past the Bobcats 20-1. The Centurions haven't had any issues with the Bobcats recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive victory against them.

Kali Crain made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Layla Helman looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, Allie Sauerbrunn was incredible, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. Lily Johnson was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs and one stolen base.

Century always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .658. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Meridian only posted an OBP of .133.

Century pushed their record up to 12-7 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.0 runs over those games. As for Meridian, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-11.

Century and Meridian could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Centurions will face off against Crab Orchard at 3:30 p.m. on Monday with a big rank disadvantage (347 vs. 92). Meanwhile, Meridian (ranked 587th) will meet Carbondale (ranked 201st) at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
