2A Region 1 recap October 8, 2013
Walnut extended the longest winning streak in 2A Region 1 this week by beating Hatley, 48-21. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.
New Site lost to East Union 59-22 last week, the largest margin of any game. J.T. Herring was a bright spot for the Royals, as he ran for 211 yards in the defeat.
Shaquille Shinault made the biggest impact on defense this week as Baldwyn beat Mantachie. The 5-foot-10 senior recorded 2 fumbles.
Herring was a force in the backfield as New Site fell to the Urchins.
Herring provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Royals lost to East Union.
Dustin Carrell put up the best numbers through the air as the Mustangs lost to the Bearcats. He finished with a total of 8 completions for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns. Carrell's favorite target this week was Nick Burns, who caught 3 passes for 47 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Mantachie's Carrell and Burns have proven to be a lethal combination. Carrell has thrown for 927 yards this season, while Burns has 20 catches for 385 yards. New Site's Herring leads the league in rushing yards with 891.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place East Union takes on second place Walnut. Scott Duley's team bested the Royals last week, while Walnut defeated the Tigers.
Fans will be thrilled by an exciting game in the secondary when Lynn Moore's team's Burns goes up against New Site's Koie Jackson.
Next week's game between the Mustangs and the Royals will feature a good passing match up as Carrell will test his arm against Jackson's defensive ability.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Urchins take on John Meeks' team. East Union has allowed 92 points this season, while the Wildcats have given up 151. The Urchins allowed 22 points last week as they topped New Site.
Walnut made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 9,189 from 9,395. The advance stemmed from a 48-21 victory over Hatley last week.
