Foothill is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Friday. They will face off against the Shasta Wolves at 7:00 p.m. Foothill will be strutting in after a win while Shasta will be coming in after a loss.
It was a proper cat-fight when Foothill duked it out with Corning on Friday. The Cougars came out on top against the Cardinals by a score of 36-27. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Cougars' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 228th, while the Cardinals are ranked 503rd).
John Puffer looked great while leading his team to the win, throwing for 171 yards and a pair of TDs on only 15 passes, while also punching in one touchdown on the ground. Ethan Andersen also helped out as he racked up 110 receiving yards.
Foothill was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 242 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in November of 2024.

Another reason for the win was Foothill's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for six sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Brandt Davis and Evan Hutchings, who racked up four sacks between them. With that strong performance, Hutchings is now averaging an impressive 6.3 total tackles per game. Foothill got some further help from Kadin Segrest: he picked up a sack and made nine total tackles.
Meanwhile, Shasta's game last Friday was all tied up 7-7 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They took a hard 35-21 fall against Las Plumas. The Wolves have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Foothill will need to focus on slowing down Daniel Shankles, one of several Shasta players who made an impact when they last played. He rushed for 90 yards and one score on only 11 carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Jack Peterson, who threw for 128 yards and one touchdown.
The victory made it two in a row for Foothill and bumps their season record up to 2-3. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to yards per carry: they averaged an imposing 6.4 yards per carry in those games compared to only 3.57 in the others. As for Shasta, they now also have a losing record of 2-3.
Foothill was able to grind out a solid win over Shasta when the teams last played back in October of 2024, winning 21-14. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
