The Ballard Bruins will challenge the Oldham County Colonels at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Ballard is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.
Ballard is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Bullitt East just ended the team's seven-game winning streak on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Chargers by a score of 11-9. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Bruins have suffered against the Chargers since May 9, 2015.
Aubrie Newton made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs. That home run was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Lucy Strobel, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Oldham County fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Floyd Central on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Highlanders by a score of 3-2. Like the Bruins, the Colonels also had to let a streak go: they had won three straight, but that streak is no more.
Jozie Lashley put in work no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
In other pitching news, Oldham County got a good showing from Kailyn Claybern, who pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Claybern has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.
Oldham County's loss dropped their record down to 21-4. As for Ballard, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-10.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Ballard hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .377. However, it's not like Oldham County struggles in that department as they've averaged .371. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Ballard's way against Oldham County in their previous matchup back in May of 2023, as Ballard made off with a 16-3 win. Do the Bruins have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Colonels turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
