King Philip Regional is 9-1 against Milford since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Warriors will look to defend their home field against the Scarlet Hawks at 4:15 p.m. King Philip Regional's pitching crew has only allowed 1.8 runs per game this season, so Milford's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
King Philip Regional is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Massachusetts' top teams: Attleboro, who was ranked 21st at the time (King Philip Regional was ranked eighth). The Warriors' pitcher stepped up to hand the Bombardiers a 10-0 shutout on Tuesday. Considering the Warriors have won six matchups by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Not much got past Cam Hasenfus, who gave up just a hit and racked up eight Ks to keep Attleboro off the board. Hasenfus has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Drew Herlin was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Kevin Heine, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run.
King Philip Regional was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Milford came up short against Attleboro on Monday and fell 6-3.
Max Marin was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over five innings pitched. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in March.
At the plate, Milford saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Derek Marcolini, who went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Michael McGrath also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
King Philip Regional pushed their record up to 14-2 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.7 runs over those games. As for Milford, their loss dropped their record down to 5-12.
King Philip Regional came out on top in a nail-biter against Milford in their previous matchup back in April, sneaking past 1-0. Do the Warriors have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Scarlet Hawks turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
