Veterans Memorial has gone a perfect 9-0 against Hanna recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Veterans Memorial Chargers will head out on the road to challenge the Hanna Golden Eagles at 6:30 p.m. Veterans Memorial has given up an average of 6.8 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
Things were looking good for Veterans Memorial after they put the first points on the board on Tuesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell 11-8 to Harlingen.
Arianna Garcia was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she tossed seven innings while giving up four earned (and seven unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
In other batting news, Mia Gonzalez was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one home run and four RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in February. Itzel Rodriguez was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
Even though they lost, Veterans Memorial kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. This was only their first loss (out of four games) when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Tuesday just wasn't the day for Hanna's offense. They lost 19-0 to San Benito on Tuesday. Having soared to a lofty 14 runs in the game before, the Golden Eagles' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Hanna has also been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-9-1 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.9 runs over those games. Veterans Memorial's record now sits at 7-12.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Veterans Memorial hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .312. However, it's not like Hanna struggles in that department as they've averaged .370. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Veterans Memorial's way against Hanna when the teams last played back in February of 2021, as Veterans Memorial made off with a 16-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Veterans Memorial since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
