Willowbrook is 8-2 against Berwyn/Cicero Morton since May of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Warriors will head out on the road to square off against the Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. Willowbrook will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak.
Willowbrook had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 13-run drubbing they dealt Proviso East on Friday. The Warriors were the clear victors by a 13-0 margin over the Pirates. Considering the Warriors have won ten matches by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Julian Ayala looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
On the hitting side, Jake Bonino and Tommy Whiting did most of the damage at the plate: Bonino went a perfect 1-for-1 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while Whiting went 1-for-2 with three runs and two RBI. Those two RBI gave Whiting a new career-high. Noah Martinez also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Berwyn/Cicero Morton started off well but failed to capitalize on an early lead against Hinsdale Central. They fell just short of the Red Devils by a score of 8-7 on Wednesday. The Mustangs haven't had much luck with the Red Devils recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they've met.
Daniel Gross was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed 4.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in April of 2024.
At the plate, Alejandro Guzman made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was James Richmond, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Willowbrook's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-6. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Berwyn/Cicero Morton, their loss dropped their record down to 5-18.
Berwyn/Cicero Morton's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Willowbrook has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .434. It's a different story for Berwyn/Cicero Morton, though, as they've only averaged .364. Will they be able to contain Willowbrook's hitters?
Willowbrook skirted past Berwyn/Cicero Morton 2-0 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Do the Warriors have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
