Providence School and Ponte Vedra are an even 3-3 against one another since February of 2015, but likely not for long. Providence School will venture away from home to take on Ponte Vedra at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Providence School was handed a 13-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene last Thursday. They had just enough and edged out Mandarin 8-7. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Stallions as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Elle Burns was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out 12 batters over nine innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off nine hits. Burns was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-4. She also hit a double, marking her first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sophia Prather, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Ava Dimitrakopolis also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Ponte Vedra waltzed into their contest last Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Indians a 9-0 shutout. The Sharks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by eight runs or more this season.
The result came thanks to Taylor Scribner's shutout, as she gave up just seven hits.
On the hitting side, Nadia Campbell was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Carley Clarkson, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Ponte Vedra's win was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-1. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Providence School, their record now sits at 2-5.
Providence School's speedy runners might be the difference in Tuesday's game. Providence School has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Ponte Vedra, though, as they've been averaging only 0.7 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Providence School continue to outrun the ball?
Providence School suffered a grim 7-0 defeat to Ponte Vedra in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. Can Providence School avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
