The Melba Mustangs will take on the Marsing Huskies at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Melba is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.6 runs per game this season.
Melba is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 21 runs on Monday, they were much more limited against Parma on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 3-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Mustangs have suffered since May 9, 2024.
Melba saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cooper Brooks, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Marsing, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. Everything went their way against New Plymouth on Wednesday as they made off with a 9-3 win. Considering the Huskies have won six matchups by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
The team relied heavily on Luke Steinmeyer, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. He has become a key player for Marsing: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 3-4 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Teagan Kinney, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Marsing is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Melba, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-5.
Friday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Melba has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .451. However, it's not like Marsing struggles in that department as they've averaged .481. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Melba suffered a grim 10-0 defeat to Marsing in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Will the Mustangs have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
