WPIAL AAAA Foothills recap Oct. 9, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Hempfield Area, who took down 150th ranked Hempfield Area, 17-14.
Penn-Trafford extended the longest winning streak in WPIAL AAAA Foothills this week by beating Connellsville, 38-17. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
The Spartans' dynamic duo of Ty George and Tyler Handlan proved tough for Altoona to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. George threw for 157 yards and one touchdown and Handlan had 132 yards receiving. Billy Thomas helped Hempfield Area's passing attack out by catching four balls for 47 yards.
Lincoln Clayton was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 18 carries, he ran for 187 yards as Kiski Area fell to the Lions. Teammate Ricardo Carter added to the ground attack by rushing for 57 yards.
Thanks to the talents of Thomas Woodson and Andre Martin Gateway has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Woodson leads the league in passing with 963 yards, while Martin has rushed for 549 yards this season. Rich Bowen's team's Joey DeFloria leads the league in receiving yards with 264 on 12 catches.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Penn-Trafford takes on the Cavaliers. John Ruane's team is currently in first, while Kiski Area is in fourth.
Altoona moved up to 240 from 305 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in WPIAL AAAA Foothills. John Franco's team was able to make the jump by beating the Spartans 17-14.
