One of the top high school quarterbacks in the country announced his college decision on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday as
Ryder Lyons of
Folsom (Calif.) committed to BYU.
Rated the No. 4 signal caller in the Class of 2026 by 247Sports, Lyons visited BYU and Oregon earlier this month before selecting the Cougars.
Lyons hopes to extend a storied tradition of quarterback play at BYU with past greats like Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer, Jim McMahon, Steve Young and Virgil Carter, who also went to Folsom.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound rising senior used his arms and his legs to lead Folsom to a state championship in 2023 as a sophomore while winning Sac-Joaquin Section titles the past two seasons.
During his sophomore year, Lyons passed for 38 touchdowns and ran for 23 more, tallying 4,507 total yards.
As a junior, Lyons passed for 46 touchdowns and added 14 more on the ground as the Bulldogs went to the CIF Northern California final.
He follows in the footsteps of his father, Tim Lyons, who was a defensive back for legendary head coach LaVell Edwards at BYU in the 1990s.
Older brother
Walker Lyons was rated as the No. 5 tight end in the nation in the Class of 2023 out of Folsom and plays for USC.
Lyons joins
Vlad Dyakonov (USC),
Jameson Powell (Ole Miss),
Jason Hill Jr. (Stanford),
Sunia Vuki (Oklahoma State) and
Isaiah Williams (Nevada) as Folsom players in the Class of 2026 to make commitments.
