The Strawberry Crest Chargers lost against the Sumner Stingrays back in January of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. Strawberry Crest took a serious blow against Sumner, falling 63-21. While losing is never fun, Strawberry Crest can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 450th, while Sumner is ranked 101st).
Despite the loss, Strawberry Crest had strong showings from Jenna Tia, who scored seven points, and Airreonna Cauldwell, who scored seven points. Tia scored a full 33.3% of Strawberry Crest's points, the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Sumner's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jewel Harwell, who scored 19 points along with eight steals. Those eight steals set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Briana Gill-guyette, who scored 12 points along with seven steals and six rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Strawberry Crest and nudges their season record down to 5-7. As for Sumner, they pushed their record up to 14-2 with that victory, which was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Strawberry Crest will take on Blake at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Sumner and Bloomingdale will face off at 6:30 p.m. on January 12th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Bloomingdale is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling.
