The Wharton Wildcats put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They took down Sumner 55-39. Winning is a bit easier when you work as a team to rack up eight more assists than your opponent, as Wharton did.
Wharton's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jayla Grady, who scored 15 points along with six assists and six rebounds. Those six assists set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaytee Tyler, who scored 17 points.
Sumner lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jewel Harwell, who scored 16 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. That's the first time this season that Harwell scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Mikayla Berry, who scored six points along with seven rebounds.
Wharton's victory bumped their record up to 11-0. As for Sumner, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-2.
Wharton won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Seacrest Country Day at 3:35 p.m. on December 30, 2023. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Florida (Seacrest Country Day is ranked 80th, while Wharton is ranked 64th). Sumner won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Nease at 3:35 p.m. on December 30, 2023. Hopefully Nease focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Friday.
