Baseball Recap: Hopewell Valley Central Has No Trouble Against Montgomery

Hopewell Valley Central came out on top against Montgomery on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive nine-run fifth inning. The Bulldogs were the clear victors by a 12-1 margin over the Cougars. That 11 run margin sets a new team best for the Bulldogs this season.

Owen Lengle made a splash no matter where he played. He tossed five innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gavin McCaffery, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Those RBI marked the first that he has brought in this season. Blake Echternacht was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Hopewell Valley Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.4 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 10.

Hopewell Valley Central has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-7-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Montgomery, they dropped their record down to 3-10 with the loss, which was their seventh straight at home.

The Bulldogs are facing the Blue Devils at the right time seeing as the Blue Devils are stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Montgomery, they will square off against Watchung Hills Regional at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
