Mount Carmel's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaylen Delaney, who rushed for 67 yards and two TDs on only eight carries, and also picked up 67 receiving yards and one score. Delaney got the majority of those receiving yards when he pulled down a pass and took off for a gain of 55 yards. Michael Kimsal was in the mix as well, providing Mount Carmel with two touchdowns.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Mount Carmel was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 284 rushing yards. They are a perfect 5-0 when they've run for more than 200 yards.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Mount Carmel's defense and their three sacks. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Aidan Brokenshire and Chance Swatski, who each picked up one sack apiece. Cooper Karycki got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, everything came up roses for Shamokin Area against Loyalsock Township on Friday as the squad secured a 42-7 victory. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Indians' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania football rankings (they are ranked 113th, while the Lancers are ranked 301st).
Mount Carmel better keep an eye on Logan Steele. He was instrumental in Shamokin Area's win, rushing for 128 yards and one TD on only eight carries, while also throwing for 28 yards and one touchdown. That's the most rushing yards Steele has posted since back in August. Another player making a difference was Zakem Clinton, who rushed for 99 yards and one score on only 14 carries.
Shamokin Area didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Steele and Colin Steinhart. Steele got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Shamokin Area's record now sits at 9-0. As for Mount Carmel, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Mount Carmel has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 220.7 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Shamokin Area struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 317 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Mount Carmel might still be hurting after the 21-0 loss they got from Shamokin Area when the teams last played back in October of 2024. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Clinton, who rushed for 73 yards and a pair of TDs. Now that the RED TORNADOES know the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
