The Salamanca Warriors will head out on the road to challenge the Southwestern Trojans at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Salamanca comes in on five and Southwestern on nine.
Salamanca stacked a tenth blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Saturday. They blew past Dunkirk 67-19 at home. Salamanca pushed the score to 52-12 by the end of the third, a deficit Dunkirk had no chance of recovering from.
Salamanca can attribute much of their success to Karina Mireles-crouse, who scored 14 points along with seven steals, and Lezly Mccomber, who scored 16 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. Mireles-crouse hasn't dropped below two steals for nine straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Keianna John, who scored six points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, Southwestern can now show off eight landslide victories after their most recent match last Saturday. They put the hurt on Fredonia with a sharp 58-38 win. Given Southwestern's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 163rd, while Fredonia is ranked 363rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Salamanca is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-3 record this season. As for Southwestern, they pushed their record up to 10-6 with that victory, which was their fourth straight on the road.
Salamanca ended up a good deal behind Southwestern in their previous matchup back in January, losing 60-46. Can Salamanca avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
