Spruce Mountain is 7-2 against Mountain Valley since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Phoenix will look to defend their home field against the Falcons at 11:00 a.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Spruce Mountain barely beat Winthrop the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Phoenix blew past the Ramblers 9-3 on Friday.
Rylee Turner made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with three RBI.
In other batting news, Tyoaka Hodgkin was incredible, going 1-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. Chloe Ames was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Mountain Valley had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Wednesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Roadrunners a 22-0 shutout. The Falcons' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Addison Libby looked comfortable as she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
At the plate, Layce Boucher was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyanah Wing, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Mountain Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .743. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matches.
Mountain Valley's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Spruce Mountain, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Spruce Mountain has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Mountain Valley struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Spruce Mountain took their victory against Mountain Valley when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 18-6 score. Do the Phoenix have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Falcons turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
