Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Jackson Sumner of
Champlain Valley Union (Hinesburg) is the 2022 MaxPreps Vermont High School Football Player of the Year. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound junior wide receiver and defensive back led the RedHawks to a 10-1 record and the Division I state title – the first in school history.
For the season, Sumner totaled 1,271 offensive yards and 23 touchdowns. He combined for 504 receiving and rushing yards with 11 scores in three postseason games, including six catches for 89 yards and an 11-yard touchdown run in the title contest that helped put the game away for CVU.
With Sumner as the focal point of the offense, the RedHawks averaged nearly 40 points per game.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released January 10.
