On Wednesday, the Coronado Cougars faced the Mojave Rattlers in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Coronado walked away with an 81-72 win over Mojave. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Coronado got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jonny Collins out in front who scored 26 points along with five rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Collins has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Lantz Stephenson, who scored 20 points.
Despite the loss, Mojave had strong showings from C.J. Shaw, who scored 29 points along with seven rebounds and two steals, and Zacarrion Jackson, who scored 13 points along with nine rebounds and six assists. Shaw is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Nathan Sherrard was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with five rebounds.
Coronado's win bumped their record up to 10-8. As for Mojave, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 10-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Coronado will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Spring Valley at 6:30 p.m. on January 16th. Spring Valley is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak. As for Mojave, they will head out on the road to face off against Foothill at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Foothill is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 60.7 points per game.
