Summertown and Lewis County are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2022, but likely not for long. The Eagles will be playing in front of their home fans against the Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Summertown is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
If Summertown beats Lewis County with eight runs on Saturday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two matches with that exact score. Everything went the Eagles' way against Battle Creek on Thursday as they made off with an 8-2 win. The Eagles have beaten the Grizzlies the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Grizzlies has come to flipping the script.
Summertown got a great performance from Keegan McCafferty as he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. McCafferty has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Cason Blackwood was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Kane Konig was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Summertown kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Lewis County hadn't done well against Loretto recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Panthers came out on top against the Mustangs by a score of 10-6. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Panthers.
The team relied heavily on Fletch Kelsey, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double. He has become a key player for Lewis County: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 8-13 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Brayden Whitlow, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run.
Lewis County's victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-13. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Summertown, their victory bumped their record up to 20-8.
Summertown came out on top in a nail-biter against Lewis County when the teams last played last Tuesday, sneaking past 8-7. Do the Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Panthers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
