Baseball Game Preview: Colorado Academy Mustangs vs. Basalt Longhorns

The Colorado Academy Mustangs will head out to square off against the Basalt Longhorns at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Colorado Academy's pitching crew has only allowed 2.2 runs per game this season, so Basalt's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Colorado Academy blew The Academy out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Thursday The Academy got their revenge. The Mustangs fell just short of the Wildcats by a score of 4-2. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Mustangs couldn't push the score so high this time.

Riley Summers made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple and one RBI. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one triple the last three times he's played. Will McCandless also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Meanwhile, after some red-hot attacks at the plate in their last four contests, Basalt finally came back down to earth on Wednesday. They lost 10-0 to Aspen. The game marked the first time this year in which the Longhorns were not able to get on the board.

With the defeat, Basalt broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 5-2. As for Colorado Academy, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 5-1.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Colorado Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Basalt struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Everything went Colorado Academy's way against Basalt in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Colorado Academy made off with a 17-4 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
