Van Alstyne is 1-0 against Bridgeport since October of 2022, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Van Alstyne Panthers will head out on the road to face off against the Bridgeport Bulls at 7:30 p.m. Bridgeport took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Van Alstyne, who comes in off a win.
Last Friday, Van Alstyne earned a 27-14 win over Farmersville. Van Alstyne pushed the score to 27-0 by the end of the third, a deficit Farmersville cut but never quite recovered from.
Van Alstyne can attribute much of their success to Weston Johnston, who rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Bridgeport ended up a good deal behind Gainesville on Friday and lost 42-26.
Van Alstyne's victory was their fifth straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 4-3. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-6 Sanger and 1-6 Lebanon Trail (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 36.1% over those games). Bridgeport has been struggling this season, as they've lost six of their first seven contests, which leaves them at a 1-6 record this season.
Everything went Van Alstyne's way against Bridgeport in their previous meeting back in October of 2022 as Van Alstyne made off with a 38-13 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Van Alstyne since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
