The Crystal City Javelinas scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They took their matchup at home with ease, bagging a 101-67 victory over Hondo. Given Crystal City's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 686th, while the Owls are ranked 1373rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Crystal City found their leader in underclassman Christopher Mena, who scored 22 points along with seven assists and five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Mata, who scored 12 points along with eight assists and six rebounds.
Crystal City pushed their record up to 18-12 with that win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 92.0 points per game. As for Hondo, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost eight of their last ten games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-22 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Crystal City will challenge the Cowboys at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Cotulla is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak. As for Hondo, they will head out on the road to face off against the Pirates at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Lytle's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last five contests.
