East Side (Cleveland, Miss.) extended its winning streak to nine games with a 24-8 victory over
McClain (Lexington, Miss.) on Saturday.
After taking the lead on a
Jonathan Clerk-Beamon touchdown pass to
Dy'monquae Pates in the first quarter, the Trojans led 12-8 at the half.
East Side expanded its lead to 16 points entering the fourth quarter. ES scored two times in the third, including once on a defensive touchdown.
The Cleveland school's most effective player was Clerk-Beamon. The senior quarterback threw one touchdown. He has now scored one touchdowns on the season.
The Mustangs' lone touchdown came on a kick return in the second quarter.
The Trojans entered the contest giving up 19.1 points per game this year. East Side held firm on the defensive front, and kept McClain well below the 31.5 points it had been averaging per game.
When the two teams played each other last season, ES came away with a 56-12 victory.
The loss comes after McClain defeated Velma Jackson 22-20 last week.
East Side (9-0) will play a 3A Region 4 game against Ruleville Central next week, while McClain (6-3) will take on Leland also in a 3A Region 4 game.
