The Duchesne Eagles will take on the Gunnison Valley Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Duchesne is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
Duchesne easily dispatched North Sevier on Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. Duchesne fell just short of Summit Academy by a score of 9-7 on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Eagles have suffered since March 15, 2024.
Connor Karren made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Gunnison Valley had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.6 runs) and they went ahead and made it eight on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by an 18-1 margin over the Braves. The Bulldogs' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Porter Comin and Dillon Dyreng were a major factor while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Comin pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Dyreng pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in March of 2024. At bat, Comin scored two runs while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances, while Dyreng scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Those three runs gave Dyreng a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Daxton Knudsen, who went 3-for-5 with one home run, six RBI, and three runs. Those six RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Waylon Sorenson, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two doubles and one RBI.
Gunnison Valley kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Gunnison Valley's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-5. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. As for Duchesne, their loss dropped their record down to 5-8.
Duchesne was able to grind out a solid victory over Gunnison Valley when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 6-3. Does Duchesne have another victory up their sleeve, or will Gunnison Valley turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
