On Saturday, Basic was able to grind out a solid victory over Franklin, taking the game 47-36. Given Basic's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 70th in Nevada, while Franklin is ranked 332nd in Washington), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Basic's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Saiah Minnis, who scored seven points along with eight rebounds, and Ja'Mari Cottingham, who scored 16 points. Those 16 points set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Christian Baltierrez, who scored six points.
Sunny Hills has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. Their rough 63-40 defeat to Sonora on Thursday might stick with them for a while. Sunny Hills has struggled against Sonora recently, as their match on Thursday was their ninth consecutive lost matchup.
Sunny Hills' defeat came about despite a quality game from Kingsley Ashley, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds. Another player making a difference was Justin Shim, who scored nine points.
Basic has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 5-5 record this season. As for Sunny Hills, their defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-4.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Basic have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 28 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Sunny Hills, though, as they've been averaging only 29.3 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
