Scappoose is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Thursday. They will venture away from home to take on the St. Helens Lions at 5:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Scappoose comes in on nine and St. Helens on five.
Scappoose's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Wednesday. They walked away with a 3-0 win over Gladstone. Those three runs were actually the fewest the Indians have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
Saige Casey was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over four innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
Casey wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Lux Johnson, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Ashlynn Komp also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, St. Helens got the win against Tillamook on Tuesday by a conclusive 16-2. The Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven contests by six runs or more this season.
Like Scappoose, St. Helens also got a great game from a two-way player: Eme Curaming. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). Curaming was also big at the plate, going 1-for-5 with three RBI. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Michaela Dueck was a standout: she fired off two home runs and five RBI while going 2-for-4. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Maddy Lahey, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.
St. Helens always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .525. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Tillamook only posted an OBP of .143.
Scappoose's victory was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-0. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for St. Helens, their record is now 10-1.
Both Scappoose and St. Helens just can't seem to miss. The Indians have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 13.1 hits per game. However, it's not like St. Helens struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.5 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Scappoose came out on top in a nail-biter against St. Helens in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, sneaking past 2-1. Do the Indians have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Lions turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
