The Gregory-Portland Wildcats will head out to challenge the Ray Texans at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this match.
Gregory-Portland easily dispatched Miller on Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Wildcats fell just short of Palmview by a score of 5-3 on Saturday. The loss was just more heartbreak for the Wildcats, who fell 2-0 when the teams last met back in March of 2023.
Austin Vasquez put in work while hitting and pitching. He pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in March. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI.
In other batting news, Blaine Elizalde made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Ray wound up with the same score they had in their last game (4-3), but sadly the team found themselves on the wrong side of the score this time.
Like Gregory-Portland, Ray also got a great game from a two-way player: LUCAS TINAJERO. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 9.1 innings while giving up three earned runs off seven hits. TINAJERO has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-6 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, JOSH HERNANDEZ was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in four of his six plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.
Gregory-Portland's record now sits at 14-12. As for Ray, their record is now 14-10.
Everything went Gregory-Portland's way against Ray in their previous matchup back in March, as Gregory-Portland made off with a 7-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wildcats since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
