Softball Recap: Columbia Has No Trouble Against Wellington

Columbia had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Wellington on Tuesday. The Raiders put the hurt on the Dukes with a sharp 11-1 win. Considering the Raiders have won nine games by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Sadie Schulke was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out nine over five innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted over her last nine matches. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

In other batting news, Bree Heidecker was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Kaitlyn Miller was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs.

Columbia always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .581. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wellington only posted an OBP of .435.

Columbia pushed their record up to 12-5 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Wellington, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Columbia will face off against Oberlin at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Raiders are facing the Phoenix at the right time seeing as the Phoenix are stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Wellington, they will challenge Firelands at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
