After both having extra time off, the Poughkeepsie Pioneers and the Gorton Wolves will shake off the rust and duke it out at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
Back in September, Poughkeepsie didn't have quite enough to beat Barack Obama School for Social Justice and fell 3-2. While the Pioneers didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Lightning 25-19 in the first set.
Poughkeepsie took Barack Obama School for Social Justice into a fifth set but they suffered a heartbreaking seven-point loss. The match finished with set scores of 19-25, 25-15, 25-10, 18-25, 15-8.
While Gorton didn't have the best season last year (they finished 3-8), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They put the hurt on Spring Valley with a sharp 3-0 victory on Tuesday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Wolves.
Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-13, 25-10, 25-21.
Gorton's win came from a few key players Poughkeepsie will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Lila Soto, who had seven kills and seven aces. That's the most aces she has posted over her last seven matches. The team also got some help courtesy of Katie Rojas, who had ten digs and three aces.
Gorton was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 28 aces. That's the most aces they've managed all season.
Gorton's record now sits at 6-2. As for Poughkeepsie, their loss dropped their record down to 1-1.
Poughkeepsie took their win against Gorton in their previous meeting back in September by a conclusive 3-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pioneers since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
