Basketball Recap: Mahpiya Luta Picks Up Ninth Consecutive Victory

Mahpiya Luta put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. They blew past the Lakota Tech Tatanka 77-51. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 44-22.

Mahpiya Luta was led to victory by Ashlan Carlow-Blount and Jodene Big Crow-Hunter. Carlow-Blount dropped a double-double on 32 points and 16 boards, while Big Crow-Hunter went 11 for 24 en route to 31 points and six steals. Carlow-Blount is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 34 games she's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Dorthie Mesteth, who posted seven points and seven rebounds.

Mahpiya Luta smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in January of 2024.

Lakota Tech lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Bella Shangreaux, who went 5 of 12 on her way to 14 points and five boards. Shania Ferguson was another key player, putting up 12 points along with three steals and three blocks.

Mahpiya Luta's win was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-0. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 29.3 points per game. As for Lakota Tech, the defeat snapped their winning streak at five games and leaves them with a 7-3 record.

Mahpiya Luta will challenge Vermillion at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Vermillion has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Lakota Tech, they will take on Deubrook at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Deubrook's defense has only allowed 29.8 points per game this season, so Lakota Tech's offense will have their work cut out for them.
