The Pinecrest Patriots's game on Friday was all tied up 19-19 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They fell to Scotland 57-53. While losing is never fun, Pinecrest can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 363rd, while Scotland is ranked 115th).
Ava Depenbrock and Aniya Mcgregor certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Depenbrock dropped a double-double on 14 points and 17 rebounds, while Mcgregor scored 14 points along with four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Zanodiya Mcnair, who scored ten points.
Scotland's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Alicia McClain, who scored 11 points along with eight assists and six rebounds. McClain is crushing the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Madysan Hammonds was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with two steals.
Pinecrest has not been sharp recently as the team has lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-14 record this season. As for Scotland, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-2.
Pinecrest will head out on the road to square off against Hoke County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Pinecrest focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Friday. As for Scotland, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Lee County at 6:00 p.m. Hopefully Scotland focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 on Friday.
