Giles is 2-7 against Fort Chiswell since April of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Spartans will head out to take on the Pioneers at 5:00 p.m. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Giles sitting on three straight wins and Fort Chiswell on four.
Seven must be Giles' lucky number: they beat George Wythe with that score not once but twice on Monday. The Spartans beat the Maroons by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 7-4.
Meanwhile, Fort Chiswell got the win against Floyd County on Thursday by a conclusive 12-6.
Blair Jackson made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 15 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, one triple, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Annalees Kuehl, who went 3-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. Tristen Thomas was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Fort Chiswell was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .421. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Floyd County only posted a batting average of .267.
Giles' victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-5. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Fort Chiswell, their record now sits at 12-5.
Giles couldn't quite get it done against Fort Chiswell in their previous meeting last Wednesday as they fell 4-1. Can the Spartans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
