The Grafton Clippers were the 60-48 winner over the Warhill Lions when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. Grafton fell 50-43 to the Lions on Thursday. Grafton has been going strong on the season, but this is now their second defeat in a row.
Despite the loss, Grafton saw an underclassman step up: Taylor Ragland dropped a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds. Ragland is crushing the rebound category: she's posted at least ten every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Alonni Wells, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and six assists.
Warhill's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Mary Drakes, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 12 rebounds. Drakes is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last five games she's played. D'Shela Walker was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with six rebounds and five assists.
Grafton's defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-3. As for Warhill, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season.
Grafton will head out on the road to challenge the Falcons at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. York has now lost 14 straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 4. As for Warhill, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Blue Devils at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Mathews will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Virginia Rankings (they are ranked 399th, while the Lions are ranked 114th).
