Lopez is 0-3 against Harlingen South since October of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Lopez Lobos will look to defend their home field against the Harlingen South Hawks at 7:30 p.m. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Lopez has struggled recently with six losses in a row, while Harlingen South will arrive with five straight victories.
Lopez pushed their score all the way to 44 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 49-44 hit to the loss column at the hands of Donna North. Despite running the score up even higher than they did two weeks ago (31), Lopez still had to take the loss.
The losing side was boosted by Eddie Slovak, who rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.2 yards per carry, and also picked up 35 receiving yards. Another player making a difference was gabriel rios, who picked up 262 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Harlingen South got themselves on the board against Donna North two weeks ago, but Donna North never followed suit. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Chiefs 64-0 at home. The result was nothing new for Harlingen South, who have now won three contests by 30 points or more so far this season.
Among those leading the charge was David Sanchez, who rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns. Dylan Anaya was another key contributor, rushing for 58 yards and a touchdown.
Lopez's loss was their ninth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which dropped their overall record down to 1-7. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 18 points per game. As for Harlingen South, their win two weeks ago bumped their record up to 5-2.
Friday's match might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Lopez has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 155.1 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Harlingen South struggles in that department as they've been even better at 243.9 per game. It's looking like Friday's contest might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Lopez took a serious blow against Harlingen South in their previous meeting back in October of 2022, falling 71-0. Will Lopez have more luck at home instead of on the road?
