The Southampton Academy Raiders pushed their score all the way to 60 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 68-60 hit to the loss column at the hands of Brunswick Academy. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Southampton Academy in their matchups with the Vikings: they've now lost four in a row.
Southampton Academy's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was G Applewhite, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 22 rebounds. Applewhite has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last 16 times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of A Darden, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Southampton Academy has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season. As for Brunswick Academy, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 14-6.
Southampton Academy won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against the Patriots at 7:00 p.m. on January 31st. Amelia Academy is no doubt hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses. As for Brunswick Academy, they will head out on the road to challenge the Vikings at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. Halifax Academy will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 604th in North Carolina, while the Vikings are ranked 220th in Virginia).
