Softball Recap: Vanguard Gets the Win

Vanguard never got on the board in their matchup last Tuesday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Lake Weir on Wednesday. They blew past the Lake Weir Hurricanes 12-3. The Knights haven't had any issues with the Hurricanes recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.

Destiny Horcajo was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits. What's more, she gave up only four walks, the fewest she's had since back in March of 2024. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-5. She is also on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now stole at least one in each of the last four games she's played dating back to last season.

In other batting news, Vanguard got a massive performance out of Alivia Vance, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. What's more, Vance posted three RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Jaelynn Whipple was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI.

Vanguard kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lake Weir onlymanaged three hits.

Vanguard's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Lake Weir, their defeat was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-4.

Looking ahead, Vanguard will head out on the road to square off against Belleview at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Lake Weir, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Forest at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Lake Weir has given up an average of 7.5 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
